As discussed at recent meetings, the range committee would like to offer the NRA Home Firearms Safety Class to members, family and friends at a discounted rate.
While this class provides the necessary credentials required to apply for a new MA LTC/FID it is also a good overview / update for individuals who already have the LTC and would like a refresher on handguns / rifle / shotgun platforms and MA firearms law.
We will be offering this class to the club on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9am-2pm. We will be limiting the class to 20 students. If the class fills up we will schedule additional ones.
The club normally charges the public $100 per student. Fees for this special class will be as follows:
NRA Home Firearms Safety Class Overview
Course Goal - To teach the basic knowledge & skills and attitude necessary for safe handling and storage of guns in the home. This is a five-hour classroom based safety course focusing on revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns and rifles intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation.
Students will receive the NRA's "Home Firearm Safety" handbook and lessons in the following subjects:
There is a short written (open book) test on the lesson material at the end of the class followed by live fire on the range. After successful completion, students will receive an NRA Home Firearms Safety Certificate and a Mass State Police Basic Firearm Safety (BFS) Certificate. This course will qualify applicants for Massachusetts firearms licenses (LTC and FID card). To obtain your permit, you must be 21 years old or older and cannot have a criminal record.

NRA Home Firearms Safety Class Overview
Course Goal - To teach the basic knowledge & skills and attitude necessary for safe handling and storage of guns in the home. This is a five-hour classroom based safety course focusing on revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns and rifles intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation.

- NRA rules for safe gun handling, using & storing guns
- Identifying various types of handguns, rifles and shotguns, their parts and how they function
- Ammunition types, firing sequence of a cartridge, and how to identify the correct ammunition for a firearm
- Basic procedures for cleaning a gun
- MA Gun Law: possession / transporting / storage, assault weapons ban, approved weapons roster, private sales / acquisitions & transfers, use of deadly / lethal force, castle doctrine, cessation of threat, transferred intent and discharging a firearm
- Continued opportunities for skill development
- How to pick up / receive firearms from another individual
- How to verify that firearms are “clear and safe” by visually & physically inspecting them
- How to safely pass firearms to another individual
- How to load, cock / de-cock, unload and make safe all presented firearms
- Return guns safely to table with actions open
